In any normal year, Tori Oehrlein of Crosby-Ironton’s record for career points would be next to none.
This year, Maddyn Greenway of Providence Academy is hot on the chase to compete for the scoring record.
She’s the daughter of former Vikings all-pro Chad Greenway, but she’s carved out a name for herself.
In a win against Blake, she became the fourth player in Minnesota history to break 5,000 points, but she could’ve broken it sooner.
“I needed 54 and I was at 47,” said Greenway.
Her mom told her that she didn’t have the signs yet for 5,000 points, so she decided to pass more.
“I held out for six minutes and then got it tonight, and we have the signs,” Greenway said.
With the signs secured, she hit 5,000 points and kept going. She ended up with 37 points, 10 assists, and eight steals.
“It’s something I’ve built for and worked towards for a lot of years,” Greenway said. “Just to know that it’s finally here and it’s finally the night was kind of crazy.”
Oehrlein sits just ahead of her in points, but Greenway has five more games left to Oehrlein’s two and has been dominant. Scoring 40 points per game since then, including 57 against Hill-Murray.
After that, it’s on to the state tournament, and as it turns out, they could play each other for the Class 2A championship and the scoring record.
“I think I’ll pass the record and whatever between me and Tori will happen,” Greenway said. “But for me, I just want to end up on top, and enjoy the last month with my teammates.”
Greenway can win her fifth state championship this year, and she’ll move on to the Kentucky Wildcats next year.
She said she wants to be great. If she can get both the title and the record, she may just end up being the greatest ever.
She continues against Maple Grove Wednesday night.
