Minnesotans beat the cold at Winter Beer Dabbler

Beer enthusiasts gathered in the cold on Saturday afternoon for the Winter Beer Dabbler at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.

The Beer Dabbler is an annual festival that draws local and out-of-state crowds to sample a variety of alcoholic beverages. In addition to the drinks, the event featured various forms of entertainment, including motorcyclists performing backflips and live music.

The fairgrounds were lined with tents of over 130 vendors, giving event-goers virtually thousands of selections of beer, ciders and seltzers.

Even with the 30-degree temperatures, the event was packed around 4:00 p.m. Fire pits were scattered across the event in case attendees felt cold.

Nathan Arvold, who represented St. Paul-based Lake Monster Brewing, said the event encapsulates the Minnesotan experience. Arvold was dressed head-to-toe in floral gear to match his brewery’s tropical theme.

“You know, it’s pretty Minnesotan,” Arvold said. “Put on your big boots and your warm clothes and have some fun.”

Some dressed in standard winter gear, while others wore onesies or coordinated matching costumes with friends.

Many participants wore necklaces lined with food, a tradition in the Beer Dabbler that exemplifies a loophole in fairground rules. Event attendee Hailey Green went as far as attaching a shrimp cocktail platter to her necklace.

“One of the best parts of Beer Dabbler is they say if it fits on a necklace, you can bring it in,” Green said. “So, there’s no reason not to bring a shrimp cocktail.”

While the event gives off a fun and easygoing vibe, event coordinator Sam Steen said the Beer Dabbler helps tackle a recent issue facing the brewery scene.

“Breweries need a lot of help right now,” Steen said. “They’re a community hub; they’re with us as a place to seek refuge when things are bad, they’re there for celebrations. These people need our support. That’s why we get them out here — to get these breweries recognized.”

With its quirks and traditions, the Beer Dabbler brings together Minnesota’s beer-drinking community while fostering an inclusive environment for every kind of participant.
