Scavenger hunt combines the virtual and physical world

The League of Legends club put on a scavenger hunt at Coffman Memorial Union last week to help promote engagement with the club.

Julia Truong, an officer of the club, said she wanted to create a physical activity that went beyond the typical events the club holds.

“We were hoping to kind of get out of that mold a little bit and collaborate with other groups,” Truong said.

Daniel Dowdle said he wanted to make sure that anyone could participate in the scavenger hunt regardless of their experience with League of Legends.

“Anybody that can find one of the QR codes and look at it and be like ‘what’s this’ you know can play it,” Dowdle said.

The scavenger hunt consisted of nine QR codes, seven of which were hidden around Coffman Memorial Union. A participant would scan a QR code, be led to a Google form to fill out and would be left with a clue after filling out the form.

Ei Carlson said the scavenger hunt was more difficult than he expected it to be.

“It seemed easy at first and then out of nowhere it was like ‘oh no we can’t find something’,” Carlson said. “We hunted for a while.”

The winners of the scavenger hunt were announced during Trivia Night at Goldy’s Gameroom.

Troung said that she received good feedback from people who completed the scavenger hunt.

“We received some nice thanks you and people really seemed to enjoy it,” Truong said.

Dowdle said that he wants to put on the scavenger hunt next year because of the event’s success.

“I want to make sure this thing keeps going and is a success, so I’ll put my work in,” Dowdle said. “I’ll throw my hat in.”

Besides the scavenger hunt, Truong said people can join the club whenever they want.

“It’s really cliche, but the best part of League club is the community,” Truong said.

Dowdle said as a commuter student, League club has been a great way for him to meet people at the University. He added everyone in the club is very welcoming.

“You dont need to be a die hard player or really a player at all,” Dowdle said. “You can just come in a chat and people will be happy to talk.”
