Stone Arch Bridge renovation will close half of the bridge this spring

This spring, half of the Stone Arch Bridge in Minneapolis will close during renovations.

MnDoT announced a $26.1 million renovation that will close part of the bridge during the spring and summer of 2024 and 2025.

Many people use the bridge as a walkway, bike path or photo spot.

Hannah Fryer, a Marcy Holmes neighborhood resident, said she and her dog walk across the bridge daily. Despite the bridge’s closure, she said she still plans on going to the bridge often.

“If they are doing something to improve it, it doesn’t really bother me,” Fryer said.

Anna Peopke, a former University of Minnesota student, said she would go on weekly walks with her friends across the bridge.

“I love the skyline view,” Peopke said. “I mean it’s gorgeous, I think it’s a good glimpse of the city just right outside right across the river.”

The bridge itself is also known for its craftsmanship. MnDoT said the renovation will focus on repairing stone and working on mortar. Mortar is the material used to bind stones and bricks. The bridge’s last renovation took place about thirty years ago.

Tasha O’Donnell lives outside of Minneapolis but travels to the city to go on walks across the Stone Arch Bridge. Despite feeling disappointed that part of the bridge will be closed, she said she wants the bridge to be in it’s best condition.

“It’s just so iconic like it’s just a great walk and a lot of good memories,” O’Donnell said. “So I think I will still go.”
