Open Mic Night at the Whole Music Club on April 18, 2023.

First and final open mic night of spring 2023

By popular demand, the Whole Music Club hosted the first and final ‘Open Mic Night’ of the 2023 spring semester on Tuesday, April 18. After a brief hiatus this past semester, the stage was filled university singers and songwriters.

“I was practicing a bunch of different songs and stuff and I really cracked down in the last three days,” Ryan Fauglind, said about having a short notice until the performance.

“I’ve been writing music since I was about 13, but non of them were really that good,” Timmy Magdall said. “Now I’ve been writing pretty consistently now for about two years.”

The audience was vibing out to rap, Barbie movie classics, and 80’s ballads all night long. Including some original pieces. Magdall performed an original titled, ‘White Flowers’. A song which he wrote detailing his current long distance relationship with his girlfriend who lives in Tennessee.

“In Texas, magnolia flowers they bloom in the summertime and that’s usually when I get to see her cuz of school and stuff so when we go back and see each other.’ Magdall said. He and his girlfriend are originally from Texas and visit when they can. “So I came up with the idea and then just thought about all of the times she’d come here, I’d go to Tennessee just kind of document that experience and come up with the words after that.”

Open Mic veterans can still feel nervous performing in front of a live audience. Although some have their own back-stage tricks to hide their nerves.

I get super extra bubbly when I’m nervous so it kind of balances itself out,” Katelyn Mayne said.

“If you come here and it’s not great, so be it. My first time it was not good I was so nervous and I came back in. It was so fun to just kind of get out there and try new things. And I think if you’re interested in doing it. Do it once and just give it a shot,” Fauglind encouraged.

Students will have to wait until next semester to sign up for the next Open Mic Night. Student Union Association representatives said that they are planning to have the Whole Music Club host this event once a month starting with the fall 2023 semester.
