UMN Students Welcome Spring With a Relaxing Evening of Flowers, Tea and Painting

When you think of a college party loud music, beer, and dancing may all come to mind, but at the Saint Paul Student Center UMN students celebrated spring a little differently.

Last Thursday students attended the Art of Bloom event put on by Student Unions and Activities and spent the night painting still-life portraits of beautiful bouquets while sipping on tea and hanging out with friends.

“I thought it was really cool because I really like painting and flowers, in general, I think it’s a really unique event that I haven’t really seen be done at the U” explained Beaash Habib, a freshman here at UMN.

But even those who aren’t really artists found themselves enjoying the calming atmosphere.

Freshman Jacob Williams said, “I really do just enjoy having this more mellow time to just really take some time for yourself you know but also with other people as well.”

Soft music played throughout the evening while students took their minds off of their daily stressors and focused on capturing the details of their table’s bouquets onto a canvas.

A common reason attendees needed to relax: finals which are just around the corner.

“I think it’s nice just because it’s a little bit smaller and like more calm and I feel like I need that because finals are coming up” continued Habib.

But not all students were looking for a distraction from tests and projects.

“Honestly I came here because I wanted to hang out with my friends because I’m going through a breakup and I got to be with them I got to have some support around me get out of my house stop crying” explained UMN freshman Maggie Carrier with a laugh.

Throughout the night she and her friends and other attendees tested their creative abilities with guidance from a projected video tutorial.

But no matter what brought them here it was clear that students were enjoying a much-needed break while creating some fantastic new dorm room decor and even better memories.
